Microsoft Copilot Studio

Copilot Studio MCP server for live trend data

Add TrendsAGI to a Copilot Studio agent by URL. No connector to build, no OpenAPI file to maintain: paste the endpoint, paste an API key, and the agent gets read-only trend volume, velocity, insights and recommendations as tools.

Add a custom MCP server by URL

Server URL

https://api.trendsagi.com/mcp

Authentication

Authorization: Bearer <TRENDSAGI_API_KEY>

Works inside one agent, today.

The custom-by-URL path needs no tenant-wide registration and no Microsoft review. It is a tool on the agent, configured by whoever builds it.

If your organisation routes MCP servers through Agent 365 instead, an administrator approves the server once and it appears in the tool registry for every agent builder. Both paths reach the same endpoint.

  1. 01

    Create a TrendsAGI API key

In TrendsAGI, open Profile > API Keys and create a key named for the agent. The secret is shown once.

  2. 02

    Open the agent's Tools page

In Copilot Studio, open the agent and select Tools, then Add a tool. Choose the MCP tab and pick the option to add a custom MCP server by URL.

  3. 03

Paste the endpoint and the key

Enter the server URL below, choose API key as the authentication type, and paste the TrendsAGI key. Copilot Studio connects immediately and lists the tools.

  4. 04

    Allowlist the tools

Every tool is enabled by default. Turn off execute_sql if the agent should not run queries, or crisis events if the plan does not include them, so the model is not offered a call that would fail.

  5. 05

    Test one prompt

Ask the agent which topics are accelerating fastest this week. A 401 means the key is wrong or revoked; an empty tool list means the connector could not reach the host.

  6. 06

    Publish

Publish the agent as usual. The MCP connection is part of the agent definition; rotating the TrendsAGI key means updating the tool's connection.

What the agent can call

list_trends
Trending topics with measured volume, velocity and growth; filter by category or phrase.
search_trend_insights
Find trends by theme and see why they are moving.
get_trend_analytics
A trend's volume over 24h, 7d or 30d, to judge rising versus fading.
get_trend_ai_insights
Summary, themes, sentiment, audience and marketing angles.
list_recommendations
Prioritised recommendations with evidence completeness, not invented odds.
Every tool and limit

Allowlist before you publish

Copilot Studio enables every tool an MCP server exposes. That is more surface than most agents need, so turn off the ones the agent should not be offered:

  • execute_sql and read_data_schema, if the agent should only read ranked lists rather than query.
  • list_crisis_events, on plans that do not include crisis monitoring.
  • search_trend_insights, on plans below Advantage.
  • Anything the agent's instructions do not mention, so the model is not tempted to improvise.

TrendsAGI also omits plan-gated tools from tools/list, so a Starter account never sees insight search or crisis events in the first place.

Known limits

  • Read-only. The connection cannot change your account, edit campaigns or spend money.
  • Every tool call counts as one API request against the plan's daily limit.
  • Lists cap at 25 trends, 10 recommendations and 200 SQL rows, and a tool result caps at 20,000 characters.
  • TrendsAGI measures trend volume, velocity and growth. It does not report ad spend, conversions or attribution.
  • A recommendation's confidence reflects how complete its evidence is, not the chance that it will work.

Copilot Studio MCP questions

Direct answers about the connection, published as FAQPage structured data.

Can Copilot Studio call a remote MCP server?

Yes. Copilot Studio can add a custom MCP server by URL and discovers its tools over Streamable HTTP. It also accepts servers published to the organisation through Microsoft Agent 365, and servers added with a Power Apps custom connector that declares x-ms-agentic-protocol mcp-streamable-1.0.

Which authentication does TrendsAGI use in Copilot Studio?

An API key sent as a Bearer token. That is the least configuration: Copilot Studio stores the key with the connection and sends it on every tool call. TrendsAGI also supports OAuth 2.0 with dynamic client registration for clients that need a browser sign-in.

Does an administrator have to approve the server?

Not for the per-agent custom-by-URL path, which is configured by whoever builds the agent. If the organisation routes MCP servers through Agent 365, a developer registers the server with the Agent 365 CLI and an administrator approves it in the Microsoft 365 admin center before it appears in the registry.

Can I add TrendsAGI to the Microsoft MCP server catalog?

That is a separate certification track. Microsoft runs an MCP server certification in preview through the Apps and Agents for Microsoft 365 and Copilot offer type, and it is reviewed rather than self-serve. Until then, the custom-by-URL path works without any Microsoft involvement.

Is the Copilot Studio connection read-only?

Yes. Every TrendsAGI MCP tool reads. The agent can list trends, read trajectories, fetch AI insights, review recommendations, inspect a watchlist and run read-only SQL. It cannot change your account, edit campaigns or spend money.
